Information we collect
Information you give us
If you email us, we receive your email address, your name if you include it, and the contents of your message. We use this only to reply to you and to keep a record of the conversation.
Information collected automatically
When you visit the Site, some information is collected automatically:
- Server logs: our hosting provider records technical details of each request, such as IP address, browser and device type, the page requested, the referring page and the date and time. These logs are used for security, troubleshooting and preventing abuse, and are kept for a limited period.
- Analytics: we use web analytics (such as Google Analytics) to see which pages are read, how visitors find the Site, and what type of device and browser they use. Analytics providers use cookies or similar identifiers and may receive your IP address. We use this information in aggregate to improve the Site.
- Outbound link clicks: when you click a link that leaves the Site, including affiliate links, we may record that the click happened so we can understand which content is useful.
We do not knowingly collect sensitive information, such as financial account details, government ID numbers or health information. Please do not send this kind of information to us.
Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small files stored by your browser. The Site itself does not require cookies to work. Cookies may be set by analytics providers and, after you click an affiliate link, by the operator you visit. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; the Site will still work. You can also opt out of Google Analytics using Google’s browser add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
How we use information
- To run, secure and improve the Site.
- To understand which articles and pages are useful to readers.
- To confirm referrals with our affiliate partners, which is how the Site is funded.
- To reply to messages and correction requests.
- To comply with the law and protect our rights and the rights of others.
Affiliate links and third-party sites
Some links on the Site, including links that start with /go/, are affiliate links. When you click one, you are taken to a third-party website, and that operator may set cookies or collect information to record that you arrived from the Site. We do not control those websites, and their own privacy policies apply. Please read them before you register or share any information. More detail is in our affiliate disclosure.
How we share information
We share information only in these cases:
- Service providers who help us run the Site, such as our hosting provider, email provider and analytics provider, under terms that limit how they use it.
- Affiliate partners, who may receive information about a referral when you click an affiliate link.
- Legal reasons, when required by law, court order or a valid request from authorities, or to protect our rights, users or the public.
- Business transfers, if the Site or our business is sold or merged, in which case this policy will continue to apply to the information transferred.
We do not sell personal information for money. Under some US state laws, sharing information with analytics or advertising partners can count as “selling” or “sharing”. You can opt out at any time as described below.
Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, including California (CCPA/CPRA), Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Texas, Oregon and other states with privacy laws, you may have the right to:
- know what personal information we hold about you and receive a copy of it;
- ask us to correct or delete it;
- opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information, and of targeted advertising;
- not be treated differently for exercising these rights.
To make a request, email hello@gaasa.org with the subject “Privacy request”. We may need to confirm your identity before we act, and we will respond within the time the law requires. You may use an authorized agent to make a request for you. We also honor browser Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals as an opt-out of sale or sharing where the law requires it.
Age restrictions
The Site is intended only for adults aged 21 and over (18 and over where permitted). We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Data retention and security
We keep personal information only for as long as it is needed for the purposes described in this policy, or as required by law. We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect it, including encrypted (HTTPS) connections. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
